money

I had a conversation with money the other day.

“I am neutral,” it said.

“I was never meant to be hoarded or used to manipulate or control or abuse others.

“I was meant to ease the exchange of things. I held the value of seasons. While fruit ripened.

“I was a temporary abstraction of value with a limited lifespan.

“I am tormented by what others have done with me. The distorted way they have used me. All they’ve done is create more and more distance. Between people. The more abstract I become – from shells to coins and paper to digital symbols – the more I am worshipped, misunderstood, and maligned.

“I never wanted to be worshipped. It is a very lonely existence.

“I want to be back in the hands of people. I want to travel from hand to hand. I want to experience the adventures of movement and transmutation. One day I am in India representing textiles and spices. Tomorrow I am in Iceland representing the rarest of wools. The next day I am in Venezuela or Mexico or Morocco. I am happiest when I bring love and joy to real people through exchange – not a bloodless, soul-less ledger that keeps me in a cage.”
